what happened to your hard drive that was so bad you had to wipe it?

my CPU (a mac) crashed on me after an Apple approved Software Update. i lost everything including my (ultimate explicit) school presentation for Health class. wiped everything

All kinds of viruses making it act like crap, I know next to nothing about the technical and my parents know even less. Seemed like the logical choice.
